The Indigenous Psychological Perspective

‘Indigenous Psychology’ is understood as a research perspective that considers psychological theories as well as the investigation and treatment practices based on them in their cultural dependency and thus their limited scope. In this context, the globally dominant academic mainstream psychology shaped primarily in Europe and the USA since the 19th century, is also captured in terms of its cultural and ideological, i.e., indigenous, characteristics and distinguished from other indigenous psychologies. This chapter outlines how the indigenous-psychological perspective sharpens the attention for the history and philosophy of science, science policy, and various theoretical aspects - the reflection of which should be fundamental for any form of a culture-informed psychology, but is still largely neglected, even in cultural psychology.
