Sustainability in the Service Sector – Status Quo in Service Research

Environmental sustainability is gaining increasing attention in academic research on services. This chapter provides a systematic literature review on scholarly research published between 2012 and 2023 about environmental sustainability practices and impacts in the service sector. The analysis reveals a growing body of literature on key sustainability business practices in the service sector as well as impacts of the service sector on the environment. The findings show not only important relationships between different service industries and environmental sustainability, but also future research directions on the potentials of the service industry to leverage sustainable business practices in other industries.
