The Commemorative and Legitimizing Dimension of Cultural Property in the Hellenistic Empires

In times of war, the violations of cultural property and its quasi-“institutionalized” appropriation as booty were common phenomena accompanying defeat, conquest, and establishment of control. This paper explores how cultural property taken from the defeated was staged as legitimizing reminders of military deeds and demonstration of victory by discussing some selected examples from Hellenistic times.
