Typical Pitfalls in Science Pitches

  • Stephen Wagner

摘要

Fact-based presentations are especially important in the science community. However, what often lacks is a personal connection to the topic. For a convincing Science Pitch, focus on particularly interesting content. Share special moments in your research and your vision, mission, and values. Adopt your audience’s perspective and find direct content connections to neighboring disciplines. Get to the essence of your topic without exceeding time limits. Analyze your manner of speaking: Direct addresses like “you” and “we” sound more personal than a distant “one”. Short sentences alternating with longer ones are more engaging than long, complex sentences. Translate facts into memorable stories and anecdotes. Reduce text on slides to a minimum and instead use images and graphics that are easy to grasp. Gain new insights through personal conversations well before your presentation. With a well-prepared plan B, you can modify your Science Pitch to unforeseen situations. Arrive early at the venue and familiarize yourself with the technical setup—including online settings. Prepare for audience questions.
