Setting off, seeking new things, discovering the world and oneself in the process—whatever the motives for travelling to countries near or far may be, hardly any region embodies this longing more than the mountain world of the Hindu Kush-Himalaya, twice as high and twice as long as the Alpine massif. Travellers, wanderers and climbing tourists seek and find the places of their desired happiness there. Their rapt tourist gaze makes them close their eyes to what is ugly, blocking out the threatening reality. Tourists do not want to hear about the horrors of the merciless monsoon rains or the rapid demise of the glaciers.
