Understanding the thermodynamic relationships of compression and expansion processes is an important building block for understanding, developing, and evaluating machine concepts already in the early project phase. This section provides a detailed discussion of the thermodynamics of the polytropic compression process. A calculation methodology is described that can be implemented in a spreadsheet. In addition to the thermodynamic fundamentals and their characteristics, important, easily calculable characteristics for turbo compressors are determined. This presentation is followed by a list of abbreviations and a glossary.
