Longing for Youth and Coming of Age: The Funk Web Series Wishlist and Public Broadcasters’ Fight for a Young Audience
摘要
The online content network Funk—jointly created by the German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF and financed via broadcasting fees—occupies a special position in the market of audio-visual productions on the internet. Through its diverse and professionally created content that covers a wide thematic variety and is shown on multiple platforms, Funk tries to appeal to a highly dynamic young audience. In the network’s first few years, the mystery web series Wishlist (G 2016–2018) belonged to one of Funk’s most successful fictional productions. Hence, Wishlist serves as an excellent example to show how the specific production process and marketing strategies have influenced (and are reflected in) the structure and aesthetics of a Funk series, along with its relation to its media environment on YouTube. Moreover, Wishlist tries to balance conflicting goals: On the one hand, it wants to address an audience of online-savvy adolescents. On the other hand, it does not want to sacrifice the public service broadcasting’s educational mandate. Thus, Wishlist can be analysed as an innovative example of audio-visual online fiction that holds a particular position in the landscape of German web series.
