Labour Migration as an Exampe of the Transnationalization of Work

This chapter develops theconceptual framework of the book. The transnationalization of workis examined using the example of labour migration. In the 21st century, there is an increase in cross-border mobility within and outside of employment organizations. To a significant extent, this mobility is demand-driven, as there is still a need for workers with different qualifications in “post-industrial” societies. However, it is also supply-driven, as the transaction costs for cross-border mobility have been reduced, especially in the enlarged EU. Thus, drawing on classic labour market theories, it is argued that the interaction of supply and demand continues to be central to the dynamics of labour markets. However, this interaction increasingly takes place in a transnational mobility space, where labour market-related factors interact with the institutional architecture of a free movement regime. .
