Origin and Development of the Conflict

The Middle East is illuminated from a historical perspective that stretches back to prehistoric times. The origins of the conflict between Arabs and Jews are located in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This is followed by an overview of the region. The modern conflict over Palestine is seen as a legacy of European politics. The six interstate Middle East wars from 1947/48 to 2006 are summarized. Finally, the focus is on the Palestinians who are rebelling against the Israeli occupation.
