“It’s not easy if you are Zimbabwean”: Being Zimbabwean in South Africa

So far, we have seen interviewees consulted in the study faced with various challenges, among which, their self-descriptions as Zimbabweans have played a prominent role. In terms of anti-migrant hostility, the issues of national belonging and foreignness are neatly intertwined. This linkage is portrayed when interviewees are confronted with the rhetorical question, “Why don’t you go back to your country?” (Mudiwa, 134).
