In section 11, the combustion of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in different proportions is recorded in practical tasks. The combustion of gaseous fuels is calculated with the help of their composition in volume fractions; furthermore, the combustion of liquid and solid fuels is recorded with the help of their composition in mass fractions. The minimum oxygen requirement, the minimum air requirement and the actually supplied air quantity are calculated as variables related to the physical norm volume or the mass of the fuel, for which the air/fuel equivalent ratio (air ratio) λ is used, among other things. Furthermore, the dry or moist minimum combustion gas volume as well as the actual dry or moist combustion gas volume are shown as quantities related to the physical norm volume or to the mass of the fuel. Tasks also deal with the composition of the combustion gas and use the Bunte triangle and the Ostwald triangle for illustration. In addition, the upper calorific value and the lower calorific value as well as the theoretically achievable combustion temperature of fuels are dealt with and the diagram by Rosin and Fehling is also used.
