Oilscapes—First Conceptual Approaches

Oilscapes can be understood as a thematically oriented synopsis of everything that has to do with the extraction, distribution, processing, and consumption of petroleum and petroleum products. They thus fit into a series of ‘-scapes’ that have been developed since the middle twentieth century to denote specific thematic spatial relations and which, with (Appadurai A in Disjuncture and difference in the global cultural economy. Theor Cult Soc 7(2–3):295–310. 10.1177/026327690007002017, 1990), have gained scholarly presence through reciprocal contextualization. This is particularly evident in the overlapping and interpenetration of different ‘-scapes’.
