Postmaterialism and Nature Conservation—Conflicts in Changing Values

Conflicts characterize everyday life in society. Thus, conflictual negotiations about the use of space are increasingly present—including the use and changes of landscape in the context of biotope networks. An empirical social study and socio-economic evaluation of a biotope network project has produced interesting results regarding (post)materialistic attitudes and evaluations of nature conservation. The phenomenon that moral evaluations and norms are often brought into conflict disputes and declared to be the decisive or sole evaluation and normative standard often leads to a misdirection of factual discussions. In view of a possible regulation of conflicts in the sense of Ralf Dahrendorf, the dynamics of change in individual patterns of interpretation and evaluation of landscape are therefore of interest.
