All at the Same Time: Coexistence of Tradition and Modernity in India

Much has been written on the impact of globalisation on India’s economy (e.g. Sinha, 2016) and the effect of pro-market reforms introduced in the 1990s, on policy-making and performance. By and large the focus has been on discussions about policy choices, assessing their impact or, on how institutions have adapted to, or been weakened by global trade (e.g. Panagariya, 2008). Far less attention has been given to tracking and explaining the degree of change in the mentality of those embodying and implementing new policies. In discussing the diffusion of global capitalism, the book has argued that is also necessary to explore how neo-liberalism, globalisation’s ideological counterpart, manifests itself in terms of attitudes, approaches to problem-solving, and as a fundamental determinant of action-orientations.
