Remembering Seeing, Seeing Remembering – Images of the Ghetto in Social Memory

The culture of remembrance of the Holocaust is in a state of flux: while only a few contemporary witnesses are still able to recount their experiences, the medialization of the past continues to advance. Today, historical events are conveyed to a large extent through images, and their significance continues to grow due to the digital turn. We encounter the history of the Holocaust in everyday life primarily through images processed by the media, which in turn have a special memory-forming power, or, as Walter Benjamin wrote: “History disintegrates not into stories, but into images.”
