The Onset of Modernization

Why does modernization begin and what characterizes it in its early phase? This chapter uses concepts from communication studies, the sociology of knowledge and philosophy to trace how, due to the effects of modernization that begin in the nineteenth century, the pre-modern symbolic order loses its significance and thus leads to a crisis of community.
