Terpene Compounds of Essential Oils Extracted from Callus and Cell Suspension Culture of Savannah Tea (Lippia multiflora Moldenke, Verbenaceae) Cultivated in Côte d’Ivoire

Essential oils extracted from aromatic plants have several biological properties with a broad spectrum of application. Lippia multiflora Moldenke, commonly known as savannah tea, is one of the highly prized aromatic plants due to the numerous biological properties of its essences. The quality of essential oils of this species generally lies in the chemical composition of the molecules they contain. Terpene compounds constitute a group of molecules that give these active substances their usefulness. In vitro production of essential oils from L. multiflora Mold. would allow the permanent availability of these species. Thus, the aim of this chapter is to identify the terpene compounds of essential oils extracted from the cell suspensions cultures of savannah tea. Calluses were produced from in vitro plants of L. multiflora using leaf as explant. Cell suspension cultures were then carried out from the induced callus. The cell suspension cultures were used to extract essential oils by the hydrodistillation technique. The high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) used made it possible to identify different terpene compounds. These are monoterpenes with 1,8-cineole as major compound. These terpene molecules are the same as those identified in essential oils usually extracted from the leaves of L. multiflora.
