Bioactive Secondary Metabolites from Endophytic Fungi of Marine Algae

The rise of deadly diseases like cancer and antibiotic-resistant infections necessitates the discovery of novel drugs with unique modes of action. Marine endophytic fungi—a vast and largely untapped source of biodiversity residing within marine algae—can offer a wide range of potentially life-saving natural products with applications in medicine, agriculture, and industry. The symbiotic interaction between the algae and fungus has resulted in specific co-evolutionary mechanisms of which secondary metabolites form a part. These metabolites are attracting significant attention from chemists due to their unmatched structural diversity and potent biological activities that are useful in combating cancer, tackling viruses, managing diabetes, treating neurodegenerative diseases, solving antimicrobial resistance, and boosting immunity. In addition, they offer solutions for bioremediation or environmental cleanup, sustainable pest control in agriculture, and development of novel materials and advancements in biotechnology. Thus, endophytic fungal diversity, a much-underexplored population as a resource for bioactive molecules to target various diseases and disorders, appears promising necessitating the resolution of vast knowledge gaps, supported by research collaboration.
