Piperaceae are plants native to tropical regions of the planet that have been used for centuries in various cultures for their medicinal and culinary applications. One of the characteristics of this botanical family is the abundant presence of essential oils, which are very interesting secondary metabolites for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. The following chapter highlights the uses, chemistry, and bioactivity of 11 plants of the genera Peperomia and Piper used ancestrally in Ecuador and South America, the following species were investigated: Peperomia inaequalifolia Ruiz & Pav., Peperomia pellucida (L.) Kunth, Piper arboretum Aubl., Peperomia obtusifolia (L.) A. Dietr., Piper auritum Kunth, Peperomia subspathulata Yunck., Piper carpunya Ruiz & Pav., Piper aduncum L., Piper obliquum Ruiz & Pav., Piper barbatum Kunth, and Piper pubinervulum C. DC.. In some of these species, research is still scarce, which leaves open the possibility of continuing with research that will lead us to enhance the knowledge about biodiversity of neotropical ecosystems.
