Augmented reality (AR) is a display technology with diverse applications across various industries, heavily relying on optics design to create immersive and visually engaging experiences. This chapter examines the optical requirements essential for AR display systems, including field of view, image resolution, brightness, color accuracy, and eye comfort. It provides a detailed review of the primary architectures for AR optical systems, such as traditional optics, diffractive optics, holographic optical elements, and waveguide technologies, analyzing their principles, advantages, and limitations. Furthermore, it offers a comparative analysis of microdisplay technologies, such as OLED, MicroLED, and LCD, evaluating their trade-offs in terms of image quality, power consumption, size, weight, and cost. The chapter also addresses the integration challenges of combining display and optics technologies to achieve optimal AR performance, considering their impact on system design, user experience, and industrial applications.
