摘要

Bacterial prostatitis (BP) is a clinical condition due to bacterial infection of the prostate gland. The distinction between acute BP and chronic BP depends on the duration of symptoms, considering chronic the infection that lasts for at least 3 months. The main symptoms are LUTS, either irritative or obstructive, and pain. Different bacteria are involved and Escherichia coli is the most widespread. Treatment of bacterial prostatitis primarily involves the use of antibiotics. The choice of adequate antibiotic agents is fundamental, as well as the most appropriate route of administration and duration of therapy, based on the specific characteristic of each patient. Fluoroquinolones are considered first-line drugs because of their favorable pharmacokinetic properties, generally good safety profile, and antibacterial activity.
