Robots are employed in numerous and varied applications to improve productivity, safety, and security, and more generally, our quality of life. This chapter on robotics applications aims at giving examples and providing insights into the use of industrial robots, which are still the backbone of automation in production environments. This view of industrial robots for manufacturing is expanded to robots providing professional services, e.g., in logistics and healthcare. The evolution of the application of robots is explained in three stages or revolutions: classical manufacturing automation, sensitive and safe human-robot collaborative applications as well as logistics and mobile robot applications. An outlook is given on how AI technology will be used to give the above-mentioned automatic systems more autonomy and learning ability. Finally, we examine the ongoing transformations in the industry through the use of modern information and communication technology to improve the use of robots in operational environments.
