Radiation Therapy in Chondrosarcoma and Chordoma of the Skull Base

Chordoma and chondrosarcoma are rare tumors that can arise in the skull base, a complex anatomical region containing important structures such as cranial nerves and blood vessels. These tumors can be challenging to manage due to their location and proximity to critical structures. Treatment options for skull base tumors include surgical resection followed by radiation therapy. Radiation therapy, including particle therapy such as proton and carbon ion therapy, plays a crucial role in the management of these tumors. Particle therapy offers highly conformal radiation dose distribution, minimizing the radiation exposure to critical structures in the skull base allowing to achieve the necessary total dose above 70 Gy in a critical location. Chordomas and chondrosarcomas have distinct histological features, the local control after aggressive therapy including surgery and particle therapy of chondrosarcomas is superior compared to chordomas. The use of radiation therapy in the treatment of skull base tumors requires careful planning and coordination with other treatment modalities. Close collaboration between radiation oncologists, neurosurgeons, and otolaryngologists is essential to achieve optimal outcomes. While additional research is needed, particle therapy represents a promising treatment modality that may improve outcomes for patients with skull base tumors such as chordomas and chondrosarcomas.
