Religious Practice

This review investigates the occupational risks of skin diseases among religious professionals, a demographic often overlooked in dermatological and occupational medicine literature. Referred to as “devotional dermatoses,” skin reactions linked to religious and cultural practices are explored. Religious professionals, serving as spiritual leaders across diverse faiths, hold pivotal roles in perpetuating religious customs, yet their susceptibility to occupational skin ailments remains understudied. Acknowledging the global diversity in religious beliefs and practices, this study outlines occupational skin disease risks associated with various faith traditions. Occupational exposures in certain populations are hypothesized based on analogous reactions in comparable populations. While recognizing the intrinsic significance of spirituality and faith to individuals, this study aims to enhance holistic care provision by healthcare practitioners to diverse populations, respecting varied beliefs. Despite historical data on religions, the lack of exhaustive exploration into dermatologic concerns within certain traditions accentuates the pressing need for inclusive research. Highlighting common allergens and irritants across major religious traditions, this review serves as a foundation for understanding occupational skin risks among religious professionals, aiming to prompt further comprehensive investigations in this essential domain.
