The first evidence of manmade construction dates to 400,000 B.C. in Terra Amata, France. Evidence of large-scale construction using advanced bricklaying first appeared in Mesopotamia. Cement is a fundamental part of the construction process, serving as a critical ingredient in concrete, mortar, and various other building components. Its alkalinity and other constituents, such as irritants and allergenic substances, e.g., hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)], might lead to occupational skin diseases, including allergic contact dermatitis. Occupational contact dermatitis is particularly prevalent among construction workers, affecting masons, concrete workers, etc. This chapter delves into the role of cement in occupational skin disease, epidemiology, and regulatory measures adopted to better protect workers from hazardous cement exposure. Understanding the impact of cement on workers’ skin health is essential for promoting workplace safety, developing effective interventions, and minimizing the long-term consequences of chronic skin diseases in the construction industry.
