Batik, a traditional Indonesian textile art recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2009, represents a vital component of Indonesia’s cultural identity. Originally a Javanese tradition, batik has evolved to encompass a range of uses from clothing to home decor. The batik-making process traditionally involved hand-drawn techniques using “canting” but has now also incorporated faster stamped methods. Despite its cultural significance, batik production often occurs in informal settings where safety standards are lacking, leading to health risks such as contact dermatitis. Recent studies have highlighted concerns related to the use of synthetic dyes in batik, which, while offering durability and cost benefits, pose allergenic and toxic risks. Key allergens identified include D-limonene, linalool, and linalyl acetate, which are also found in natural dyes. Other irritants such as eugenol and hydroquinone have been detected, further complicating worker safety. Although there is a growing trend toward natural dyes due to environmental concerns, these too can contribute to health issues if not managed properly. To address these challenges, it is essential to adopt safer, eco-friendly practices in batik production and enhance the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Increased awareness of the risks associated with both synthetic and natural dyes, along with improved safety measures and regulatory oversight, is crucial for protecting batik workers and preserving this cultural heritage sustainably.
