Air Hammer Operators

Air hammers, also known as power tools, are tools that use compressed air to create percussive force. These tools are used in a wide variety of professions including, forestry, mining, carpentry, and healthcare. Air hammer operators (AHO) are exposed to a variety of compounds that may induce irritant or allergic contact dermatitis. However, workers who are exposed to repetitive vibrations from 30 to 300 Hz are at risk of developing a unique condition called hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). This condition affects the blood vessels, nerves, and muscles of the hand and arm. It can cause various symptoms such as pain, numbness, and stiffness. The time it takes for HAVS to develop depends on many factors, such as the kind of vibration, the temperature of the environment, and whether the worker smokes. HAVS can have a negative impact on the ability to perform daily tasks and the quality of life of the affected workers. Treatment options for HAVS are limited, and prevention is the focus of management of HAVS with avoidance of further vibration exposure being crucial. Two classification systems are used for staging of HAVS: the Stockholm Workshop Scale, and the 2019 International Consensus Criteria. This chapter will briefly outline the various irritant and allergic exposures common in air hammer operators, and will outline the characteristics of HAVS.
