In an increasingly data-driven world, information visualization has become an indispensable tool to clearly communicate data to various population groups, from researchers to professionals to lay people. However, the design of visualization poses many challenges in itself. Visualization pipelines and models provide a means to abstract and standardize the design process of information visualization and visual analytics tools and assist in the analysis of them. At the same time, information visualization has to carefully consider human factors to ensure that the developed solutions fulfill the required goals and are appropriate for the intended target audience. This chapter provides a review of some of the most commonly used pipelines in this area and discusses the many dimensions involved in the evaluation of visualizations, ranging from algorithmic to performance-related considerations to matters of user experience. Two case studies exemplify how the pipelines can be applied in practice and demonstrate examples of a task- and insight-based user evaluation.
