Mapping Global Research Trends in E-Government Adoption: A Bibliometric Analysis Using R
摘要
Adoption of E-government has dawned as a crucial driver of transformation of public sector undertakings, by contributing enhanced transparency, delivering effectiveness and efficiency, and encouraging citizen participation. While previous researchers have examined e-government from varied perspectives, bibliometric analysis on adoption and user intention to adopt e-government services remains scarce and therefore, the present study consists of a bibliometric analysis of 681 documents published between 2004 and 2025 obtained by extracting from the Scopus database. Biblioshiny () package was utilized to visualize publication oscillations, citation flows, co-authorship structures and research areas. Results show an increase in a purposeful growth rate of 6.5%, with an average citation per document ratio of 34.26, and high international collaboration, being China, Malaysia, UK, Australia and US the prominent contributors detected. The leading sources are Electronic Government and Government Information Quarterly, while Dwivedi Y.K. is a major player in terms of authors with the highest intellectual influence. Areas of themes identified from the same studies are that e-government services, data handling, trust and digital governance are common. Our thematic mapping points to underdeveloped and nascent areas that offer potential in reorienting research on trust, cybersecurity, and citizen participation. This study adds to the body of knowledge by mapping out the intellectual structure of e-Government adoption research, making it possible for researchers, practitioners and policy makers to understand how they could enhance implementation strategies. The comparison of governance practices across geographies, as well as heterogeneity in approaches highlights the call for more context-driven research collaboration in future.
