It has an analysis of socioeconomic determinants of land degradation in different countries of the world. It is based on the data on land degradation compiled by the UNCCD for 115 countries. The analysis indicate that the dependence on agriculture, per-capita income and inequality are associated with land degradation. Specifically, countries with a higher share of land being used for agricultural purposes are also countries that experience higher land degradation. Richer countries that have low degree of inequality witness low degree of land degradation. Low levels of human development accelerate the harmful effects of inequality and agricultural dependency on land degradation. This chapter indicates the need for analysing socioeconomic enablers or disablers at the level of countries.

摘要
