In this chapter, I trace Western patriarchal culture and its gender binary from its ancient history down to modern times. I demonstrate how, through colonial and missionary programs, this oppressive culture imported and imposed the same gender binarity on various African societies. Finally, I expose the uncritical attitude of some contemporary African feminist writers and activists towards colonially distorted cultural facts with which they sustain the spurious assumption that traditional Africa was oppressive to African women. I engage Western history and literature and cite various examples to exhibit the historical accuracy of the preceding positions.

摘要

In this chapter, I trace Western patriarchal culture and its gender binary from its ancient history down to modern times. I demonstrate how, through colonial and missionary programs, this oppressive culture imported and imposed the same gender binarity on various African societies. Finally, I expose the uncritical attitude of some contemporary African feminist writers and activists towards colonially distorted cultural facts with which they sustain the spurious assumption that traditional Africa was oppressive to African women. I engage Western history and literature and cite various examples to exhibit the historical accuracy of the preceding positions.
