Organized medicine allows individual physicians to join an organization to advocate for themselves and their patients. This can be done at the local, state, and national levels. Organized medicine is what gives physicians, medical students, residents, and fellows a voice in policymaking and government. It is through organized medicine that physicians can advocate for the best quality care for their patients while also ensuring that doctors are treated fairly. It is also through organized medicine that young doctors learn about the economics and politics of American medicine. This chapter will briefly discuss the history of organized medicine in the United States and present a case as to why young doctors should participate in organized medicine and learn about the real world of American medicine.
