Mid-Level Providers and Use of Scribes to Improve Efficiency and Productivity
摘要
Healthcare has encountered a situation where the demand for our services is greater than the supply of physicians. The United States faces a dramatic physician shortage. In rural communities, this physician shortage has created primary care deserts. The cut to Medicaid is going to exacerbate the physician shortage, especially in rural communities (Shepherd M. What proposed Medicaid cuts could mean for rural communities, hospital access. University of Michigan, School of Public Health. https://sph.umich.edu/news/2025posts/what-proposed-medicaid-cuts-could-mean-for-rural-communities-hospital-access.html#:~:text=Major%20cuts%20to%20Medicaid%20funding,these%20proposed%20changes%20could%20mean ). The supply of healthcare workers is lagging behind the demand, in part caused by pressing healthcare needs of the aging US population. Every day, 10,000 baby boomers are turning 65, and someone will need to take care of them (Heimlich R. Baby boomers retire. Pew Research Center, December 29, 2010. https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2010/12/29/baby-boomers-retire/#:~:text=By%20Russell%20Heimlich,Pew%20Research%20Center%20population%20projections ). Ideally, every patient has access to a primary care physician they see regularly to help them maintain good health and to prevent unnecessary emergency room visits. But primary care physicians are in short supply. By 2037, the estimated physician deficit is expected to reach 187,000 doctors, including a shortfall of 87,000 primary care providers (Physician Workforce Projections. 2022–2037. Data.HRSA.gov .) To address the growing demand for healthcare services, physician practices and hospitals must proactively add capacity to treat the increasing demand. This chapter will discuss the role of mid-level providers and the use of scribes to help ameliorate the shortage of physicians with the rising demand for our services.
