Remote sensing has shaped terrestrial environmental policy, rural planning and military strategy for decades. For much of Solar system exploration, where direct field observations are not yet possible, remote sensing is the only method available to researchers. To date, 10 missions have successfully operated on the Martian surface, though these have only explored a tiny fraction of the planet. This leaves orbital remote sensing as the dominant method for large scale exploration.
