Nongenetic Mechanisms of Animal Evolution
摘要
Nongenetic information is a form of biological information, alongside genetic information, and is in a close, complementary functional relationship with it. Everything we attribute to nongenetic information is ultimately implemented via genes, and, in a certain sense, genetic information is the raison d’être of nongenetic information. The discovery of DNA as the carrier of genetic information was one of the two greatest successes of natural sciences in the twentieth century. This success was so spectacular that it overshadowed several discoveries of heritable changes not involving genes or DNA nucleotide sequences, such as cortical inheritance (mid-60 s) and heritable epigenetic modifications in DNA (mid-70 s). Over time, other factors affecting inheritance across all living kingdoms, independent of DNA sequence, have been discovered, leading to the introduction of the overarching concept of nongenetic information two to three decades ago. As this chapter focuses on nongenetic information in animals, other organismal groups are considered out of scope.
