This chapter examines the concept of religion from the viewpoint of Africans. It presents the worldview, philosophical nature, and foundation of African Traditional Religion (ATR). It introduces ATR traditions through carefully selected case studies that illuminate how religion shapes morality, social identity, and communal cohesion across the continent. It further critically engages key issues such as power, gender relations, social order, and Africa’s future trajectories, while also presenting emerging paradigms that offer holistic and context-sensitive perspectives on African religious experiences and expressions. To provide clarity and context for our analyses, conceptualizations for both religion and ATR are presented in the next two sections.
