In this chapter, we discuss techniques to reduce bias in the display of search results, including methods for re-ranking results or suggesting alternative queries. We begin with a discussion of fairness principles that apply to these tasks, and then present several fair ranking algorithms. We conclude the chapter with a discussion of balanced query recommendation, the goal of which is to recommend alternative search queries that maintain high relevance but provide more balanced representation of various groups.
