Neuroscience, Technology, and Solutions for the Public Health Mental Health Crisis
摘要
This chapter addresses the urgent and growing public health mental health crisis, unpacking the complexities between mental health and mental illness while highlighting resilience as a critical concept. Beginning with a foundational overview, we will then examine how societal and environmental factors impact mental health. The distinction between mental health—focusing on well-being, resilience, and coping mechanisms—and mental illness, encompassing various mental health conditions, provides a framework for understanding this crisis. The chapter further explores behavioral neuroscience, shedding light on the brain’s response to mental health challenges and the role of neuroplasticity in fostering resilience. Neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to reorganize itself, emerges as a potential pathway for resilience, adaptive coping and recovery. Wearable technology is introduced as a transformative tool, offering real-time mental health insights and promoting self-awareness through tracking physiological responses. The discussion includes a case study on “Immersion,” which exemplifies how wearable technology can enhance mental well-being. The chapter will conclude by synthesizing insights and proposing pathways forward, emphasizing the integration of neuroscience, resilience, and technology in combating the mental health crisis. This chapter advocates for a multifaceted approach that merges scientific understanding with practical applications to address mental health in modern public health contexts.
