Luso-Italian Constellations. Overcoming the Consolidated Heritage
摘要
Manipulating objects with the gaze without being able to touch them, rearranging found elements according to new relationships, abstracting their form from their origin, and practising cosmography; these may seem like far-fetched, enigmatic formulas, remote from our lives and time, with no practical application and of doubtful utility. Not so. These are operations that belong to us and have existed since the dawn of time, when man looked up at the firmament and, setting aside the nature of celestial bodies, traced virtual lines between them, drawing mythological figures and noble animals. Idleness? Creative whim? An idle exercise? Not at all: Embellishing the celestial vault made it possible not only to formulate magnificent tales but also to establish civilised values, measure time, orient oneself at night across unfamiliar terrain, and navigate without losing one's bearings. In the same way, one can approach Lisbon, Olisipo, and discover counterintuitive dynamics, apparent yet profound links, subtle yet evident cross-references, and physical, geographical, and cultural triangulations in a Luso-Italian cosmology—not without its Greek component—a pillar of our Western culture.
