Change and Politeness
摘要
This chapter follows the premise that politeness is not static but is always evolving and ever changing as interlocutors explore ways of ‘getting along’. Change can be seen in terms of Mead’s innovative I often clashing with the conforming me. Change may be seen at the macro level (e.g. social conduct between genders) or at a micro level (e.g. ways of greeting or saying goodbye). There is often resistance towards change with contentions that civility and politeness are on the decline (e.g. in the relationship between younger and older generations). At the same time, especially in the Guadalajara context, new norms and practices are being established in order to express politeness which may reflect a negotiated aspect to politeness which often needs to be earned rather than automatically granted.
