Politeness, Tradition, and Convention
摘要
This chapter examines the interrelationship between conventional politeness practices and localised use. Variational pragmatics offers a way of understanding the pragmatic impact of localised communicative practices in establishing, developing, and maintaining relationships at a social and geographical level. By employing Mead’s creative I and conforming me contrasts are drawn between societal politeness and localised relational work. Especially in the localised Guadalajara context, this involves identifying social and personal values, attitudes, and beliefs that underlie meaningful interpersonal and transactional relationships.
