France was one of the European Union’s founding members and remains one of its most influential members today. However, its relationship with the EU is sometimes ambivalent, combining leadership ambitions with persistent scepticism, among both the elites and the citizens. This chapter explores these contradictions, demonstrating how European issues intersect with domestic political cleavages.
