Player Preferences For Play of the Game: A Study of Player Engagement on Video Game Highlights
摘要
Player engagement, building communities, and continually bringing in new players are pivotal foundations for any video game to succeed in today’s market, where there are a plethora of choices in entertainment for players. Therefore, video game clips that promote player engagement have become a significant factor in the success of games in today’s market. Members of the Overwatch community were used for this study given their long-standing experience with video game highlights. Since Overwatch players are exposed to video game highlights at the end of each match, this community makes them excellent candidates for study. This research looks to use the Overwatch community as a test case to generalize and develop principles that can be used for other video game highlight methods in the hero shooter genre to improve player engagement. Survey participants mentioned wanting highlights that showcase mechanical skill, teamwork, ability skill, and fewer ultimate abilities. However, the findings show that players were most engaged with video game highlights when it featured themselves or a friend and frequently mentioned that they wanted POTG to capture more nuanced moments during a match. Participants mentioned these nuanced moments can come in many forms, such as a tank player blocking an important cooldown, a game-deciding moment during the end of a match, or a healer saving the life of a teammate during a dire situation. Public and positive player recognition during a match also played a significant role in their level of engagement and willingness to watch a video game highlight. Improving elements such as nuance and recognition of a player’s impact in video game highlights can amplify player engagement and community building while also attracting new players, which are key factors in the success of a given game in the modern era.
