The Reality of Cyberbullying Among Adolescents
摘要
Cyberbullying is an escalating social and psychological issue in the contemporary digital age that could have impacts on youth and adolescents. This study aims to explore the prevalence and nature of cyberbullying among adolescents by reviewing and analyzing existing literature. It aims to identify the manifestations of cyberbullying, the contributing factors to its proliferation, the demographics most susceptible to such behavior, and the associated adverse consequences. The findings indicate that males are more vulnerable to cyberbullying compared to females. The predominant forms of cyberbullying include ridicule and impersonation through the creation of fraudulent accounts, often compelling victims to disclose personal information for the benefit of others. Key factors contributing to increased vulnerability to cyberbullying include low self-esteem, diminished cognitive and social skills, and social isolation among victims. On the other hand, perpetrators are often characterized by advanced digital skills and access to sensitive or derogatory information about others. The most significant adverse effects of cyberbullying include heightened levels of depression and anxiety, increased psychological loneliness, sadness, frustration, diminished self-confidence, and an elevated risk of suicidal ideation. The study emphasizes the importance of customizing intervention programs to meet the specific needs of each gender, raising awareness about cyberbullying and online ethics, and the need for effective interventions and strategies to combat cyberbullying and protect adolescents from its negative effects.
