Obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIs) are defined as injuries sustained to the anal sphincter during vaginal birth. These injuries are associated with significant maternal morbidity, including anal incontinence, urinary incontinence, chronic pelvic pain, dyspareunia and post-traumatic stress disorder. Due to the significant physical, psychological and social impact of OASIs, prevention of these injuries is imperative. Clinicians should be aware of risk factors and interventions that can be implemented to mitigate this risk. Care bundles can be used to facilitate this and empower women through antenatal education and counselling.
