Attunement as a Design Feature
摘要
In this chapter, we explore how AttunementAttunement, understood as a relational, temporal, and epistemic sensitivity, can be cultivated as a foundational design feature in twenty-first century universities. Drawing from relational principles embedded in integrative care models, this chapter argues that universities must move from being reactive systems of policy compliance to responsive ecologies (an institutional form where responsiveness and adaptability guide structure, not hierarchy) of learning and inquiry. Attunement, in this sense, is not a soft ideal. It is an organizational intelligence that enables institutions to maintain coherence amid diversity, change, and uncertainty. The phenomenon of EntrainmentEntrainment, which we discuss below, helps to understand Attunement. It encompasses Rhythm AttunementRhythm AttunementAttunementRhythm Attunement (temporal sensitivity), Professional AttunementProfessional AttunementAttunementProfessional Attunement (relational trust and holistic perception), Emotional AttunementEmotional AttunementAttunementEmotional Attunement (humane values and ethical care), Context AttunemenAttunementContext AttunementContext Attunementt (social embeddedness), and Temporal AttunementTemporal AttunementAttunementTemporal Attunement (empathy-based care). At a time when universities face pressures to standardize, scale, and metricize, Attunement offers a different horizon which emphasizes relational depth, Epistemic JusticeEpistemic Justice, and institutional wholeness. It aligns with the broader vision to resist Strategic DriftStrategic Drift as well as cultivate capacities for resilience, integrity, and imagination in the face of polycrisisPolycrisis.
