This chapter is designed to act as a catalyst to encourage coaches to increase in curiosity and experimentation with regard to what is possible using artificial intelligence (AI). By acknowledging that certain characteristics of a coaching interaction and relationship can be performed to a satisfactory—and in some cases enhanced—extent, we reflect on the perspectives a coach should hold towards AI, and identify opportunities in which AI could add value within a coaching engagement. We begin at a conceptual level by establishing that AI can expand our capacity as coaches by doing some of what we do but “better”, enhance our competence by improving what we can already do, and extend our capability by making new opportunities possible. We conclude that there are opportunities for coaches who educate themselves and use AI in intelligent ways, and that we are exposing ourselves to risks by ignoring it. We consider what sort of attitudes towards AI is valid and helpful. We look at how our personal preferences towards the adoption of AI are informed by nature and nurture, and recognise that becoming more informed about what’s possible is a positive step for all coaches. We investigate how attitudes towards AI gravitate towards the extremes, and notice how both risks and benefits have a tendency to be overstated or over-interpreted. We also explore some practical ideas around how coaches could embrace AI in their practice. This includes an overview of which aspects of a coach’s practice AI could contribute towards, and deep dives into some practical uses. The chapter concludes with an encouragement to coaches to continue in being curious—intellectually and practically—to protect our professional future and serve clients better.

摘要
