A Focus on Language and the Impact of Socially Constructed Messages
摘要
In this chapter, I move readers through the impacts of language on identity, specifically when it comes to asexual identities. Some historical connections between queer identities, marginalization, prejudice, and bias with regard to the evolving nature and power of language are presented. I discuss language as a significant factor in both demeaning and empowering marginalized identities, while making a case for owning and shifting language that embraces asexual experiences. In this chapter, language of Western cultures is highlighted through a look at the impacts of Christianity, the media, and politics on disparaging queer populations. The constructs around gender and the impact of sexualized cultures are considered. A discussion of embracing language as a key component in pride, identity, community, and understanding is noted.
