Teaching L-Systems with Python: A Pilot Study in Secondary and Tertiary Education
摘要
This study evaluates the usability of L-systems at both secondary and tertiary levels of education. The teaching material was designed to meet high school requirements and fit into the Informatics curriculum. In the first part of the teaching material, students were introduced to the syntactic rules of L-systems, followed by the step-by-step development of the program using Python. The problem was divided into subproblems representing the essential components of the program such as handling rules, generating strings, and creating visual output. The pilot study was conducted with both high school and university students. The proposed teaching material ended with a survey to better understand students’ performance and opinion. Our results suggest that the creative and visual nature of L-systems makes it an effective tool for inclusion in the programming curriculum. It also provides a hands-on opportunity to introduce basic concepts of formal languages and practice control structures.
