Algae represent a sustainable and renewable source of natural antioxidants with increasing importance in food, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmetic applications. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of microalgae and macroalgae as rich reservoirs of bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, carotenoids, phycobiliproteins, vitamins, and sulfated polysaccharides. The antioxidant mechanisms of these compounds and their roles in mitigating oxidative stress and reducing the risk of chronic diseases are discussed. This chapter highlights extraction strategies, therapeutic relevance, and industrial applications. Emphasis is placed on the ecological sustainability and biotechnological potential of algae as viable alternatives to synthetic antioxidants.

摘要
